'The Social Network 2' in the Works, Aaron Sorkin Directing

Sorkin has written a screenplay and is set to direct the follow-up to the 2010 film “The Social Network,” helmed by David Fincher, which chronicled the creation and early days of Facebook, which has grown to become the world’s largest social media platform. He started floating the idea in 2021, saying, “what has been going on with Facebook these last few years is a story very much worth telling,” but around this time, he suggested that a sequel would only move forward if Fincher agreed to direct it. Then, during a live recording of “The Town” podcast last year, Sorkin confirmed that he’d begun writing about the social media company’s recent dealings.Aaron Sorkin is not finished telling the Facebook story. The Academy Award winner is developing “The Social Network Part II” at Sony Pictures.Jesse Eisenberg starred as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in “The Social Network,” but casting has yet to be announced for the sequel.Aaron Sorkin is writing and will direct 'The Social Network Part II' at Sony Pictures, based on the Wall Street Journal's series 'The Facebook Files.'

Making “Social” Social Again. Announcing Mozi | by Ev Williams | Medium

Perhaps the reason for this is that social networks (or the social network) solved this problem—for a while. When Facebook was ubiquitous it was probably a pretty good reflection of many people’s real-life relationships. But something else happened instead. Social networks became “social media,” which, at first, meant receiving content from people you chose to hear from. But in the quest to maximize engagement, the timeline of friends and people you picked to follow turned into a free-for-all battle for attention.I’d love for you to try out Mozi and let us know what you think. There is much more to come to build the private social network, but we are finding even with a few friends on the app, it’s making life richer and more connected (so tell your friends too :).As I was making my birthday list, another, more practical, thing struck me: I had no go-to source for knowing who I knew. No online social network reflected my real-life relationships.Another idea that seemed obvious was that, given how deeply social humans are, social products would dominate the internet.

What to know about Social Security email about the "big, beautiful bill"

Millions of Americans got a confusing email from the Social Security Administration over the weekend, celebrating the passage of the "big, beautiful bill." Why it matters: It's unusual for the agency to blast an overtly political message to its massive email list, which includes retirees and those who've signed up at their website.Reality check: The big bill does contain a big temporary tax break for seniors, who get an enhanced deduction on their federal income tax for the next four years. That will mean fewer seniors will pay taxes on benefits until 2028. However, the bill does not eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits — though President Trump and the White House keep claiming it does. What they're saying: While the agency has sent out press releases, or tweets, from time to time that could be viewed as political, sending a mass email like this to this large a list is something new, say experts. "The Social Security Administration's communications shop has been politicized," wrote Nathan Osburn, a former deputy commissioner for the agency during the Biden administration, on LinkedIn.By the numbers: The email appears to have gone out to everyone who is signed up for a "My Social Security" account — that's 71 million people.

Tech leaders ready launch of Canadian social-media platform Gander to buck U.S. dominance - The Globe and Mail

Tech leaders ready launch of Canadian social-media platform Gander to buck U.S. dominance ... Ben Waldman is one of five co-founders of Gander, which is expected to publicly launch in October.Ashley Fraser/The Globe and Mail Titled Gander Social Inc., the app was created by five Canadian co-founders who grew frustrated with the torrent of trolls, disinformation and divisive content they experienced on other platforms, largely owned by American tech giants. She thought it was a smart, timely idea, given the deterioration of safe, online spaces and growing emphasis on data sovereignty. The world doesn’t need another social-media platform, she said, but it could stand to replace some of the ones it already has.A new social-media platform built by Canadians, for Canadians, and operated in Canada, will publicly launch in October with support from some of the most prominent names in the Canadian innovation sector.“What it came down to was the fear that, without firing a shot, we could easily be annexed by Trump issuing an executive order that all of his friends would immediately adhere to and shut down all of the cloud services that we use every day in business and government, and we would just simply be offline,” he said. ... Gander will feature written posts and videos, giving users the choice to tailor their feed to the types of content they most enjoy. Just like the social-media platform Bluesky, Gander is built on AT Protocol, which means it’s part of an open, decentralized network and not controlled by a billionaire.

How Social Media Brings Out the Worst in Us

Is social media harming my well-being? This is a question I often ask myself, wondering if I should keep using it or take a deliberate break from it. As someone who follows the science of well-being, I’ve seen its potential for harm and the benefits of not using it. Carr takes readers on a deep dive into the history of mass communication to illustrate how technology has been problematic from the beginning, not delivering on the promise of spreading democracy, educating the public, or increasing our sense of common humanity. Alongside current findings from social science research, he makes a strong argument that social media is hurting more than helping our mental health, relationships, and society.NC: When social media first started to emerge in the early years of the 21st century, there was this sense that simply by allowing people to communicate more, speed up the exchange of messages, enlarge the volume of messages, and expand the network of connections, it would have beneficial effects. If you define yourself by your group affiliation, you can filter information based on what the group believes is true and good. And, if different groups define themselves in opposition to one another, that creates tension and polarization. JS: Despite the harms of social media, you argue that it’s very difficult to stop.NC: About 10 years ago or so, it became very clear that there were lots of problems with social media, from creating polarization to generalized anger to anxiety and depression among people who felt always on display and always judged. Our reaction, when we started seeing all these problems, was to immediately blame the companies and their algorithms.

Social Security Email Says Trump’s Policy Bill Ends Taxes on Benefits. Does It? - The New York Times

Here’s what it actually does. ... A Social Security office in Milwaukee. The agency praised the Trump administration’s sprawling budget and tax bill in an email that went out on Thursday.Credit...Sara Stathas for The New York Times ... Tara has written extensively about Social Security and the retirees who rely on it.In a celebratory email sent to Americans across the country, the Social Security Administration praised the Trump administration’s sprawling budget and tax bill and said it eliminated federal income taxes on most retirees’ benefits. The agency’s embrace of the legislation, which was signed into law by President Trump on Friday, was also at odds with the effect it is expected to have on the program’s financial health. The law is projected to further weaken Social Security’s revenues at a time it is already facing a financing shortfall.Eliminating taxes on Social Security, along with taxes on tips and overtime, was one of Mr. Trump’s often-repeated campaign promises. The email, which went out on Thursday, said the new law “includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries,” and, “additionally, it provides an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older.”

The state of social media in 2025: Data from Sprout’s latest pulse survey

Which is why at Sprout we’re constantly checking in with audiences and social marketers to understand what’s landing in today’s social landscape, what’s falling flat and whether brands really need to concern themselves with the latest form of brain rot. Our recent Q2 2025 Pulse Survey of over 2,000 social media users across the US, UK and Australia dug into an array of issues—from which emerging platforms are piquing audiences attention (and why) to what people really think it means for brands to be bold on social. Here is what we found. Between boycotts, bans and new entrants, the last couple years have created unprecedented levels of network fragmentation. More than ever, social teams (and their leaders) are asking questions about which emerging platforms they need to prioritize and how to allocate already limited internal resources.Sprout’s latest data shows that social users are most eager to increase their time on community-based platforms like Reddit in the near term, more so than nascent spaces like Bluesky or Mastodon. Regardless of platform type, Gen Z and Millennials are most likely to drive adoption. But what’s pushing people into new territory? Across demographics, consumers’ primary motivation for trying new platforms is when they already know people using them—signaling a potential desire to get away from sponsored content and back to the essence of OG, human-to-human social.
